December 2013 summary / January events

Our final support group meeting of the year was a happy one, celebrating our group and the friendships that have formed because of it. After Donna talked to us about announcements (more below), she read a message from Bill M. who was in the room but asked Donna to read it to us. As always happens when Bill shares his thoughts with us, there were smiles and tears – he writes so beautifully. Thank you, Bill! We then each shared something about ourselves that others may not know about, with some of the comments including thank you’s to the group and an appreciation for how much the group means to us. There were also thank you’s to the group leaders and everyone else who contributes their time and efforts to making our group as special as it is, including Bill R, who formed the group many years ago. I’d like to send a BIG thank you to everyone who contributed to the generous gift card for me. It’s greatly appreciated! We ended with music and dancing – I’m pretty sure I even saw the fabled conga line. Thank you to everyone who brought the yummy food and to Donna for the sparkling apple cider.

Not mentioned at the meeting, but something that some of us found inspiring, was an article in the weekend issue of Parade magazine – Going the Distance: 6 Lessons on Living Longer and Staying Sharp From a Nonagenarian Track Star. My favorite one was “swap the Sudoku for sneakers” to boost your memory. I hope when you read it that you are as inspired as I was.

Below are the announcements for our events in January as well as a couple of upcoming PFNCA events. Please check out #2, Mall walking & coffee. It’s something we’ve done in the past and enjoyed, and it’s been requested that we do it again.

Wishing you all a Very Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Sonia

January support group events

A request was made at the December meeting to revive our mall walking and coffee socials. The idea is that you can walk before or after joining the group for coffee and a chat with your support group friends at Corner Bakery at 10:30 am. If you’re really feeling enthusiastic you can walk before AND after! No need to RSVP, but if you do go, could you please drop me a line at sonia@soniagow.com and let me know you attended? We’ll see how popular this event is and re-evaluate at the January meeting to decide if it’s a winner.

FYI – it’s .75 of a mile to walk around on one level, inside of the mall, including all the nooks and crannies.

3)  Support group meeting –  Saturday, January 25, 10:00 am – 12 noon

At: Sunrise at Fair Oaks, 3rd floor 3750 Joseph Siewick Dr, Fairfax VA 22033
Speaker: Dr. Ejaz Shamim
Dr. Shamin is the neurologist of one of our members, with special training in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, and has kindly agreed to come and speak to us. It’s rare that we have this opportunity so I hope you can join us!
