Hi Everyone! We had a great meeting on Saturday with 33 attendees and a great presentation from the ladies at Washington Speech. Lewis had worked with them and demonstrated some of the exercises. We were all impressed by how strong and LOUD his voice is now. I’m waiting to hear back from our speakers so I can post a copy of their handout for you but in the meantime, here are some announcements and events to make a note of in your calendars . . .
George Mason University offers a graduate certificate in Assistive Technology. It is part of their College of Education and Human Development.
I have been in contact with them because one of their courses is Designing Adaptive Environments. This is done now as a distance education course. They are looking for a disability to design for and have agreed to take on the Parkinson’s Disease as their case.
This would involve a presentation to the students in mid-September (PWP can email their issues with their home, better know as a wish list, and I will get the list to the professor). The grad students brainstorm and divide into working groups by rooms in the home. The professor will set up a client email (using AOL) so that the class can ask questions through-out the semester. I can be the contact for this, or multiple people can be. The PWP client can virtually attend the class presentation the 2nd week of December which is followed with Q&A.
The PWP clients then will receive a printed copy of the report, CD presentation and other related resources in January after the holidays.
I think it would be a great project for the students and it would be nice to share with other support groups. It would be something we could all have for our resource.
Let me know if you are interested. If you email me with subject “GMU universal design project” I will collect info and pass it on to GMU.

Mall walking & coffee
every Friday at 10:30 am –
The idea is that you can walk before or after joining the group for coffee and a chat with your support group friends at Corner Bakery at 10:30 am. If you’re really feeling enthusiastic you can walk before AND after! No need to RSVP. FYI – it’s .75 of a mile to walk around on one level, inside of the mall, including all the nooks and crannies.
Corner Bakery is no longer at the Fair Oaks Mall and attendance has dropped for this event so we’ll consider this cancelled for now.
If you do want to continue with this social event, please let me know (firstname.lastname@example.org) . . .
